The Maher Rankings are going to give basketball a whirl. The system has been very successful over the years at ranking soccer teams, so why not basketball? With games loaded in the database going all the way back to the 2001-02 season, the system has been able to reproduce a very similar predictive performance as it has with soccer, achieving a prediction rate between 80-85% by the midway point of most seasons. Still, it will be interesting to get your opinion, please leave a comment.
The 2015-16 season is our second for basketball. For the first year, we have included girls rankings as well as boys. There will undoubtedly be some bugs at this early stage, so let us know if you see one, and we will do our best to fix.
Some features that were developed for the soccer rankings have now been ported over for basketball, including: By Region rankings, Strength of Schedule, Movers of the Week, Upset of the Week, andRegion Strengths. We also created All-Time rankings for boys basketball at the close of last season, and will do the same for the girls by the end of this season. This year, we will also post Games of the Week for those looking to go watch the best games each week.
One final comment about the rankings, the Scaled Rating is the figure by which the team’s ranking is determined. Subtracting two teams’ scaled ratings would give you approximate estimate of the point differential in a game between them on a neutral court. Only in-state games are factored in to the calculation. Read the About page for a little more info on how the rankings are calculated.
